Sabda Tuhan hari ini sungguh sangat berkesan. Ayat emas di atas memberikan jejak yang jelas bahwa Allah sungguh mengasihi dunia. Kasih itu bukan sekadar kata-kata, melainkan nyata dalam tindakan: Ia mengaruniakan Anak-Nya yang tunggal, dengan harapan supaya setiap orang yang percaya kepada-Nya tidak binasa, melainkan memperoleh hidup yang kekal.
Kebenaran ini muncul dalam percakapan yang sangat penting antara Yesus dan Nikodemus tentang “kelahiran baru”, yaitu lahir dari air dan Roh. Nikodemus adalah seorang yang beriman, tetapi masih belum sepenuhnya memahami cara kerja keselamatan Allah. Dalam kesempatan itu, Sang Guru menyingkapkan bahwa keselamatan bukan sekadar perubahan perilaku lahiriah, melainkan pembaruan total di dalam hati manusia. Bukan hanya menjadi “lebih baik”, tetapi menjadi “manusia baru”.
Sering kali saya pun masih terbelenggu dalam pemahaman bahwa hidup beriman adalah serangkaian hal yang harus saya lakukan sebaik mungkin untuk Tuhan. Saya berdoa, pergi ke gereja, melayani, berusaha menjadi orang baik, dan menjalankan ajaran kasih dengan setia. Namun, tanpa sadar saya mengandalkan kekuatan saya sendiri, seolah-olah semua itu sepenuhnya bergantung pada usaha saya, dan saya sendirilah yang menentukan hasil akhirnya.
Pengalaman ini mengingatkan saya pada seorang sahabat yang pernah bekerja bersama saya di sebuah perusahaan asing beberapa tahun silam. Ia adalah pribadi yang sangat disiplin dan ambisius. Secara lahiriah, ia tampak berhasil: kariernya terus menanjak, penghasilannya baik, dan ia dihormati oleh rekan-rekannya.
Suatu hari, dalam percakapan santai saat makan siang, ia berkata bahwa ia percaya kepada Tuhan. Namun, ia juga merasa bahwa hidup sepenuhnya bergantung pada dirinya sendiri. Ia yakin bahwa dialah yang menentukan setiap keputusan dan keberhasilan dalam pekerjaannya, seolah-olah tidak ada campur tangan kekuatan lain.
Ia sering berkata, “Yang penting saya percaya Tuhan, kan? Itu sudah cukup. Selanjutnya, semua ada di tangan saya.” Perkataan ini menunjukkan bahwa ia seakan melupakan siapa sumber anugerah hidupnya, siapa yang menempatkannya pada posisi yang ia miliki.
Namun, waktu berjalan. Ketika kami berdua memasuki masa pensiun dan bertemu kembali dalam sebuah reuni, ia berbisik kepada saya bahwa ia menyadari pemahamannya dahulu tidaklah benar. Ia mengakui bahwa selama ini ia telah keliru.
Sabda Tuhan hari ini menjadi terang bagi saya dan bagi kita semua. Keselamatan berasal dari kasih Allah yang universal, yang dinyatakan melalui Putra-Nya yang tunggal sebagai anugerah terbesar. Iman menjadi tanggapan manusia yang sangat penting untuk menerima keselamatan itu, dengan tujuan akhir hidup kekal, bukan kebinasaan.
Kebenaran yang mendasar ini mengingatkan kita bahwa keselamatan tidak dimulai dari usaha manusia, melainkan dari kasih Allah. Ia tidak tinggal diam melihat manusia jatuh dalam dosa, tetapi mengambil inisiatif untuk menyelamatkan. Kasih-Nya tidak terbatas, melainkan ditujukan kepada seluruh dunia, tanpa kecuali.
Sungguh benar, kasih bukan sekadar perasaan, tetapi tindakan nyata. Allah memberikan yang paling berharga, yaitu Putra-Nya yang tunggal, Yesus Kristus, sebagai karunia terbesar. Ia memberikan diri-Nya sendiri demi menyelamatkan manusia.
