Tiga ayat tersebut (1Sam. 3:10, 19-20) seolah merangkum perjalanan rohani Samuel. Pada ayat ini, kita melihat sebuah pola rohani yang penting dan relevan bagi setiap orang percaya: mendengar Tuhan, melakukan firman-Nya, dan akhirnya dipercaya oleh Tuhan. Pola ini bukan hanya berlaku bagi nabi besar seperti Samuel, tetapi juga bagi setiap orang yang rindu hidupnya dipakai Allah.
Kisah ini dimulai dengan sebuah jawaban yang sederhana yang lahir dari sikap hati yang tulus dan hormat, “Berfirmanlah, sebab hamba-Mu ini mendengar.” (1Sam. 3:10). Dalam bahasa Inggris kita membedakan kata hear (mendengar) dan listen (menyimak). Kita bisa mendengar suara apa pun yang tertangkap oleh telinga kita, entah itu suara kendaraan yang lewat di depan rumah kita, suara azan dari Masjid di kampung kita, atau suara burung berkicau di pagi hari. Tetapi, untuk menyimak, diperlukan lebih dari sekadar telinga. Menyimak membutuhkan juga fokus perhatian, seluruh panca indera kita, bahkan memfokuskan pikiran kepada apa yang kita simak tersebut agar pikiran kita tidak melayang-layang.
Dalam bahasa Ibrani, kata “mendengar” diterjemahkan dari kata shema yang artinya lebih dalam lagi dari sekadar kata listen dalam bahasa Inggris. Shema berarti mendengar dengan perhatian penuh, memahami, menerima dengan hati, dan merespons dengan ketaatan. Dalam pemahaman Ibrani, seseorang belumlah shema jika belum bertindak. Mendengar tanpa melakukan dianggap belum mendengar.
Inilah perbedaan besar antara pengetahuan rohani dan ketaatan rohani. Samuel tidak berkata, “Berfirmanlah supaya aku tahu,” tetapi “berfirmanlah sebab hamba-Mu ini shema.” Ia menempatkan dirinya sebagai hamba, bukan sekadar pendengar saja. Samuel memiliki hati hamba siap menerima apa pun yang Tuhan sampaikan, ia tidak memilih-milih apakah firman itu menyenangkan baginya atau tidak. Banyak dari kita ingin tahu, ingin belajar tentang firman, dan hal itu baik. Tetapi, bila firman itu berhenti sekadar menjadi pengetahuan saja, hal itu berbahaya. Firman tidak mengubah hidup kita, bahkan tidak menyelamatkan ketika firman itu berhenti di nalar tanpa dipraktikkan.
Sikap shema inilah yang menjadi fondasi pertumbuhan rohani Samuel. Ayat 19 mencatat, “Samuel semakin besar. TUHAN menyertai dia dan tidak membiarkan satu pun dari firman yang disampaikannya gugur.” Ini bukan sekadar laporan keberhasilan, melainkan gambaran tentang kehidupan yang konsisten dalam ketaatan. “Firman tidak dibiarkan gugur” berarti firman itu tidak diabaikan, tidak disisihkan, dan tidak kehilangan kuasa dalam hidup Samuel.
Sebaliknya, “firman yang gugur” menunjuk pada sesuatu yang jatuh ke tanah dan menjadi sia-sia. Firman Tuhan dapat “gugur” bukan karena kelemahan firman itu sendiri, melainkan karena manusia mengabaikannya, tidak menganggapnya penting sehingga tidak menaatinya. Namun, dalam hidup Samuel, firman Tuhan mendapatkan tempat untuk bertumbuh dan digenapi. Samuel tidak hanya mendengar firman, tetapi menghidupinya dalam keputusan, sikap, dan keberanian untuk menyampaikan kebenaran, bahkan ketika hal itu tidak mudah.
Di sinilah kita melihat kaitan erat antara shema dan tindakan. Mendengar yang sejati selalu melahirkan perbuatan. Ketaatan inilah yang membuka jalan bagi penyertaan Tuhan. Alkitab tidak berkata Samuel makin besar karena ia cerdas atau berbakat, tetapi karena TUHAN menyertai dia. Penyertaan Tuhan tidak diberikan kepada orang yang telah menjadi sempurna, melainkan bagi orang yang memiliki hati hamba, telinga yang setia mendengar, dan tekad untuk melakukan firman-Nya.
Buah dari kehidupan yang mendengar dan melakukan terlihat jelas dalam ayat 20, “Seluruh Israel dari Dan sampai Bersyeba mengetahui bahwa Samuel telah menjadi nabi TUHAN yang terpercaya.” Kepercayaan ini tidak datang tiba-tiba. Ini bukan hasil promosi diri, pengakuan sepihak, atau ambisi rohani. Kepercayaan Tuhan lahir dari proses panjang ketaatan yang konsisten.
Ketika benih firman Tuhan bertumbuh dalam hidup seseorang, wibawa rohani akan menjadi buahnya. Orang lain bisa melihat dan merasakan bahwa perkataan orang tersebut dapat dipercaya, karena kehidupannya selaras dengan kehendak Tuhan. Samuel dipercaya menjadi nabi Tuhan bukan karena popularitas, tetapi karena integritas.
Bercermin dari kehidupan Samuel, apakah kita sudah benar-benar hidup dalam shema: mendengar dengan hati yang siap taat? Ataukah kita hanya mengumpulkan pengetahuan rohani tapi tidak membiarkan firman itu membentuk hidup kita? Apakah firman Tuhan kita biarkan gugur ketika tidak sesuai dengan keinginan kita, atau kita abaikan ketika menggoncang kenyamanan kita? Kiranya hidup kita menjadi seperti hidup Samuel: memiliki telinga yang peka, hati yang taat, dan kehidupan yang berintegritas, sehingga layak dipercaya oleh Tuhan.
