Kedegilan adalah sikap hati yang keras, menolak nasihat, dan enggan mengakui kesalahan. Kedegilan tidak selalu tampak kasar di luar. Kadang kedegilan tersembunyi di balik aktivitas, jabatan, atau pengalaman. Namun, ketika hati sudah degil, teguran dianggap ancaman, dan koreksi dipandang sebagai serangan terhadap pribadi.
Dalam Kitab Yeremia 18:18–20, bangsa Yehuda menunjukkan kedegilan hati mereka. Nabi Yeremia telah menyampaikan firman Tuhan agar mereka bertobat dari jalan yang salah. Peringatan itu seharusnya menjadi kesempatan mengoreksi diri, untuk berubah. Namun, yang terjadi justru sebaliknya. Mereka berkata, “Marilah kita menyusun rencana melawan Yeremia.” (Yer. 18:18). Mereka merasa tidak membutuhkan teguran. Mereka merasa sudah memiliki imam, orang bijaksana dan nabi, seolah-olah keberadaan para pemimpin rohani itu sudah cukup untuk menjadi jaminan bahwa mereka baik-baik saja. Mereka mengandalkan struktur keagamaan, tetapi menolak suara kebenaran. Kedegilan membuat mereka lebih memilih membungkam nabi daripada membenahi diri.
Sikap serupa juga disampaikan Tuhan Yesus dalam Injil Matius 23:1–12. Ahli-ahli Taurat dan orang-orang Farisi adalah orang-orang yang memahami hukum Taurat. Mereka duduk di kursi Musa dan mengajar banyak orang. Namun, mereka tidak melakukan apa yang mereka ajarkan. Mereka menaruh beban berat di atas bahu orang lain. Mereka merasa diri sudah benar. Apa yang mereka ajarkan hanya untuk orang lain. Kedegilan membuat mereka buta, menolak introspeksi diri sebelum menuntut orang lain.
Kedegilan sering kali berakar pada kesombongan. Ketika seseorang merasa dirinya sudah benar, ia menutup diri terhadap masukan. Ia tidak lagi mau belajar. Padahal, selama kita hidup, kita selalu berada dalam proses pertumbuhan. Tanpa kerendahan hati, pertumbuhan itu terhenti.
Kerendahan hati membuat seseorang lebih memilih mengoreksi diri terlebih dahulu daripada membela diri.
Kerendahan hati adalah lawan dari kedegilan. Orang yang rendah hati menyadari bahwa dirinya tidaklah sempurna. Ia bersedia dikoreksi, bahkan ketika teguran itu terasa menyakitkan. Ia melihat koreksi sebagai kasih Tuhan yang ingin membentuknya.
Firman Tuhan hari ini mengajak kita bercermin. Apakah kita mudah tersinggung ketika diingatkan? Apakah kita cepat membela diri ketika ditegur? Ataukah kita mau diam sejenak dan bertanya, “Tuhan, apa yang ingin Engkau ajarkan melalui hal ini?”
Tujuan Tuhan bukan mempermalukan, melainkan memulihkan. Koreksi adalah alat pembentukan. Jika kita memiliki kerendahan hati, kita akan bertumbuh menjadi pribadi yang semakin dewasa secara rohani. Hati yang lembut mudah dibentuk, tetapi hati yang degil akan retak ketika ditekan.
Kiranya kita dijauhkan dari kedegilan. Ijinkan Tuhan melembutkan hati kita sehingga kita mau diajar, mau ditegur, dan mau berubah. Dengan kerendahan hati untuk dikoreksi, kita akan hidup semakin berkenan kepada Tuhan dan menjadi kesaksian yang hidup bagi sesama. Amin
