Herodias membenci Yohanes Pembaptis karena menunjukkan bahwa dia adalah seorang pezina (Mrk. 6:18-19). Ketika dia mengatakan dia menginginkan kepala Yohanes, putrinya menanggapinya secara harfiah, menambahkan permintaannya, dan meminta Herodes: “Aku mau, supaya sekarang juga engkau berikan kepadaku kepala Yohanes Pembaptis di atas sebuah pinggan” (Mrk. 6:25). Herodes mengabulkan permintaannya. Ia menyuruh seorang seorang algojo untuk memenggal kepala Yohanes. Membawa kepala Yohanes di atas pinggan mungkin merupakan bagian dari “hiburan” di pesta ulang tahun Herodes.
Singkatnya Herodes telah tersesat. Dia sesat karena perzinaan dan pembunuhan. Ketika Herodes kemudian mendengar tentang Yesus, dia memproyeksikan penyimpangannya dan salah mengidentifikasi Yesus sebagaimana dikatakan dalam bacaan Injil Markus hari ini: “Herodes berseru, “Dia itu Yohanes yang sudah kupenggal kepalanya, dan yang bangkit lagi!”” (Mrk. 6:16). Setan telah memutarbalikkan pikiran dan hati Herodes selama bertahun-tahun, melalui dosa demi dosa yang mengerikan, dari perzinaan hingga pembunuhan. Akibatnya, ketika Herodes mendengar tentang Yesus, ia mengambil kesimpulan yang salah dan hidup tanpa Kristus selamanya.
Bacaan pertama dari Kitab Putra Sirakh justru memperlihatkan hal yang sebaliknya. Kitab Sirakh memuji Daud sebagai hamba yang setia dan berkenan di hadapan Tuhan. Meskipun ia pernah jatuh, Daud selalu kembali kepada Tuhan dengan penuh kerendahan hati dan hati yang hancur (bdk. Sir. 47:2-11). Hal ini dinyatakan secara jelas dalam bacaan Kitab Sirakh hari ini: “Tuhan mengampuni segala dosanya serta meninggikan tanduk kekuatannya untuk selama-lamanya” (Sir. 47:11). Ia bukan hanya raja besar, melainkan juga seorang penyair dan penyembah, yang hidupnya dipenuhi pujian kepada Allah. Kesetiaan seperti inilah yang dikenang dan diberkati Tuhan turun-temurun.
Saat ini banyak dari kita dibutakan, dibius, dan disesatkan oleh dosa. Dalam waktu dekat, kita mungkin memiliki kesempatan terbaik atau bahkan terakhir untuk mengenali Yesus sebagai Tuhan dan Allah kita. Bertobatlah sekarang. Mulailah kembali kepada kenyataan. Yesus akan segera datang. Jangan sampai kita semua melewatkan-Nya.
