Allah tidak pernah menolak seruan minta belas kasihan dari orang yang patah hati, bahkan pada saat kematian (lih. Mzm. 34:19; bdk. Luk. 23:42-43). Apa yang ditolak Yesus dari mereka yang berseru, “Tuhan, Tuhan,” adalah sikap “lihatlah apa yang telah kulakukan.” Hal ini ditegaskan oleh Tuhan Yesus sendiri dalam Bacaan Injil Matius hari ini: “Bukan setiap orang yang berseru kepada-Ku: Tuhan, Tuhan! akan masuk ke dalam Kerajaan Surga, melainkan dia yang melakukan kehendak Bapa-Ku yang di surga” (Mat. 7:21).
Ketika kita berseru, “Tuhan, Tuhan, lihatlah prestasiku,” posisi kita di hadapan Allah adalah seperti orang Farisi yang menaruh harapannya pada apa yang telah dilakukannya untuk Tuhan (Luk. 18:11-12; lih. Luk. 13:26). Ketika kita berseru, “Tuhan, Tuhan, kasihanilah aku, seorang berdosa,” Yesus menyatakan bahwa kita dibenarkan karena kita menaruh harapan kita pada apa yang telah Tuhan lakukan bagi kita (lih. Luk. 18:13-14). Begitulah cara kita memanggil nama Tuhan dan diselamatkan (Rm. 10:13).
Yesus mengingatkan kita bahwa keselamatan tidak datang hanya sekadar menyebut nama Tuhan. Keselamatan akan datang ketika kita taat kepada-Nya. Kisah runtuhnya Kerajaan Yehuda dan pembuangan Raja Yoyakhin merupakan gambaran nyata dari peringatan Yesus. Bacaan Kitab 2 Raja-Raja hari ini menyatakan demikian: “Ia mengangkut Yoyakhin ke dalam pembuangan ke Babel, juga ibunda raja, istri-istri raja, pegawai-pegawai istananya dan orang-orang berkuasa di negeri itu dibawanya sebagai orang buangan dari Yerusalem ke Babel” (2Raj. 24:15).
Santo Thomas Aquinas mengatakan bahwa semua perbuatan kita hanyalah jerami. Hanya belas kasihan Allah yang harus kita mohonkan pertolongan. “Belas kasihan Allah mengalahkan segalanya” (Yak. 2:13). Apa yang ingin kita tunjukkan kepada Tuhan pada Hari Penghakiman, belas kasihan-Nya yang melimpah bagi kita atau prestasi kita bagi-Nya? Apakah kita hanya menjadi pendengar Sabda Tuhan yang pasif, atau berani taat kepada-Nya sehingga memiliki dasar yang kuat dalam hidup beriman kita? Itu pilihan kita.
